No, the right of public access does not apply to vehicles. According to the Off-Road Driving Act, it is prohibited to drive motor vehicles off-road outside the road network on bare ground. It is permitted to park motor vehicles alongside the road if it can be done safely and does not interfere with the landowner’s rights. The Mikaeli Market Committee came up with the idea to put Trelleborg on the map and gained the support of Egil Ahl, chairman of the Street Committee. In the spring of 1984, City Gardener Peder Hagested and Alf Näslund of the Market Committee traveled to Alicante, Spain, to purchase 24 palm trees with the proceeds from the local coins that were being sold in Trelleborg at the time.

The palm trees have become something of a symbol of Trelleborg, which is often called the “City of Palm Trees.” Today, there are about 100 of them scattered throughout the city during the summer. The largest ones are located along Strandgatan, west of the ferry terminal.

The town’s name remained a mystery for a long time. Did it come from “three lions’ fortress,” “three legions’ fortress,” or perhaps “the thralls’ fortress”? When a Viking fortress was unearthed in the late 1980s, the explanation became clear, since ring forts in Denmark are called “trelleborgs.” “Trällor” is an old Danish word for “log,” and likely refers to the split logs that supported the palisades of the fortresses.
