A Small-Town Feel in Söderslätt

Trelleborg – the city on the plain

Trelleborg is located in the beautiful Söderslätt plain. Here, the myth of the Scanian village lives on, with its charming half-timbered houses, swaying hollyhocks, and churches dating back to the Middle Ages. Söderslätt has a total of 61 villages! People have settled here for thousands of years, drawn by the fertile soil. Today, the villages are bustling with life, featuring B&Bs, shops, and artisanal food producers alongside traditional farming.

A Historic Landscape

The first farmers began cultivating the land around 4000 B.C., but there are traces of settlements dating back as far as 3,000 years earlier. The area features archaeological sites from the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as marl graves, churches, and windmills.

The plain dotted with churches

No matter where you are, you can see churches. Many of the 32 churches date from the 12th and 13th centuries and are small, brick structures that are plastered and whitewashed. The largest churches were built in the 19th century as the population grew.

The Dream of the Skåne Farmhouse

There has always been a shortage of lumber but an abundance of clay, which led to the development of half-timbered houses. The houses are often clay-plastered with a frame made of straw or reeds. The woodwork is painted red, green, brown, or blue.

The village center

The church was the center of the village in the Middle Ages. In Söderslätt, churches are often situated at the highest point in the village. The church hill was an important gathering place where people could stay informed.

Health in the Villages of Söderslätt

The village of Fru Alstad, whose history dates back to the late Middle Ages, has a 15th-century pilgrimage church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Both the pilgrimage route and the Skåneleden trail pass through the village.

Domme

The author Victoria Benediktsson (Ernst Ahlgren) was born in Domme, near Fru Alstad. Her debut novel, *Pengar* (1885), criticizes marriage and attitudes toward women. There is a memorial stone in her honor in the village.

Böste

Böste is a well-preserved fishing village with houses dating from the 19th century. Here, there are narrow slipways and seaweed-covered paths where fishermen used to pull their boats ashore, since no harbor was ever built—the boats anchored in the roadstead.
