Record Number of Commercial Overnight Stays
Hotels and campgrounds in Sweden report their statistics to the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth on a monthly basis. Camping and vacation rentals are on the rise and now account for 79% of overnight stays in the municipality of Trelleborg. Hotel stays are declining, partly due to a decrease in conference and business travelers. The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth also reports a new record for the number of foreign guest nights, totaling 53,016—an increase of 3.4%. Trelleborg is one of the municipalities in Skåne with the highest percentage of foreign guest nights, at 31.8%. In particular, German guest nights are projected to rise to 30,042 by 2025. In Sweden, we have faced challenges from both rising raw material and energy prices and cautious consumer spending. In this context, it is valuable that tourism can contribute to increased revenue and more jobs. The number of overnight stays rose steadily after the pandemic but declined by 2.5% in 2024.

About the Statistics
The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth is responsible for the accommodation statistics. These statistics report guest nights, capacity, occupancy rates, and guests’ countries of origin for commercial lodging facilities in Sweden. “Guest nights” refers to the number of nights guests stay at these facilities. In 2024, some hotels switched booking systems, which sometimes resulted in the guest’s country of residence—for both Swedish and international guests—not being recorded. A large proportion of guest nights were therefore classified as “Not specified.” Consequently, the statistics based on nationality are not entirely accurate when comparing 2025 to 2024.
